Wikis are an incredibly easy way to create a collaborative website – one where the community of users has the ability to add or edit content. You are probably very familiar with Wikipedia, probably the most well-known collaborative wiki website. To be truly effective, wikis depend on a large community of users to keep content current and to take advantage of the community editing process. However, smaller-scale wikis can also be effective if geared toward the right audience. For example, a planning agency working on a specific plan might create a wiki for the stakeholders involved in the process to allow them to contribute ideas, make suggestions to the plan, and otherwise participate in the process. Wikiplanning is a fairly new tool that many planning agencies are using to increase civic engagement – the site bills itself as an “Virtual Design Charrette.” The City of San Jose is currently using wikiplanning for their General Plan Update process. You can check out how wikiplanning works by visiting the site and clicking on the “Get Started Now” button. Type in your e-mail and “demo” and you can check out how Charlotte, NC used wikiplanning for their planning process.
